Dr. Karamjeet Dhillon and Ms. Sonja Popovski from St. Clair College’s Research and Innovation team proudly represented the college at the International Day of the Girl 2024 Breakfast Event. Hosted by Build a Dream and featuring keynote speaker Manjit Minhas, the event highlighted the importance of empowering young women to become leaders in their fields. Dr. Dhillon and Ms. Popovski engaged in meaningful discussions, addressing challenges and sharing insights on innovation and leadership. The event served as a powerful platform for advancing the dialogue on women’s leadership in technology and beyond.

Playing with LEGO has long been a favorite activity for kids and adults alike, but at St. Clair College’s STEM Robotics Summer Camp, it’s much more than just playtime – it’s an opportunity to create, innovate, and learn how to bring LEGO creations to life through technology.

Supported by a $300,000 grant from the Ontario government through the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN), the camp offered equity-deserving youth from community groups in Windsor-Essex a chance to explore LEGO robotics and coding during an immersive five-week program in July and August 2024.

Future of Work Scholarship

The new St. Clair College ECE Outdoor Lab, located at the Chatham Campus, is an outdoor teaching area that offers a firsthand learning opportunity for ECE faculty, students, children, and our community. The outdoor lab extends the teaching space and allows students to gain practical learning experiences. The ECE Outdoor lab received funding from three partners: Municipality of Chatham-Kent, Chatham Kent YMCA Foundation, and St. Clair College Alumni Association.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent funded the new lab set in a dedicated space outside the Mary Uniac building on St. Clair Colleges Chatham Campus. In the newly funded lab, the ECE students will host classes for both theory and practice based on moving the theory of outdoor research into practice. ECE students have an opportunity to conduct experiential learning in the outdoor lab on an individual basis, with peers, and with the ECE Faculty.

In the Fall of 2022, Dr. Beverlie Dietze, Director of Learning and Applied Research at Okanagan College, invited St Clair College Chatham Campus to become part of the Outdoor Pedagogy ECE Faculty Research Project, of which she is the lead researcher. Brenda Huff, ECE Professor, is the faculty participant in the Research Project representing St. Clair College. The research project explored research and practices associated with outdoor pedagogy while developing the community of practice.

“Ten colleges across Canada participated in the project, and St. Clair College is one of three Colleges from Ontario. The involvement in the research project has rooted the new outdoor lab as a focal point for our ECE program by implementing key learnings from the research project. Our ECE students gain core competencies as graduates by bringing research and practice closer together.” Mentioned Brenda Huff, ECE Professor, St. Clair College.

In late 2023, Chatham Kent YMCA Foundation donated outdoor learning materials. This donation was to add to the equipment prepared for outdoor multipurpose use with the ECE students and the community partners. In collaboration with the ECE program, the YMCA of Southwestern Ontario hosted two community events named Loose Parts in the fall and winter. These events were open to the community to attend.

Also, in late 2023, St. Angela Merici School participated as a community partner with our ECE program. This partnership included four kindergarten classrooms with a rotating schedule of visiting the ECE Outdoor Lab. The kindergarten children and their educator teams visited the outdoor lab to explore the natural setting. The student-designed curriculum invited the children to explore and learn. The opportunity deepens the practice of the ECE students to include interaction with children to plan, implement, and reflect on their prepared curriculum.

St. Clair College Alumni Association funded the purchase and installation of raised garden beds built for an Indigenous garden project.

We are excited to announce that St. Clair College has been awarded a $500,000 grant by the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) to launch the Regional Future Workforce Program, a program designed to get more children and youth engaged in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), specifically in the automotive and mobility sector. The grant ends on December 15, 2023. This program will be administered by St. Clair College’s Research and Innovation department in collaboration with local industry and community partners, Centerline (Windsor) Limited, FIRST Robotics Canada, Invest Windsor-Essex, WEtech Alliance, and Women Enterprise Skills Training (WEST) of Windsor to form the Engage the Future Automobility Generation team.

The program will involve St. Clair College engineering and skilled trade students collaborating with University of Windsor Faculty of Education students to enter the Greater Essex County District School Board, Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board, Lambton Kent District School Board, and the St. Clair Catholic District School Board to administer hands-on lessons using an educational robot. As part of the program, funds will be used to purchase over 500 robots, with an aim to impact 1000 students in the region. The program will make Ontario science curriculum connections by engaging students in topics such as coding, programming, automation, and electric vehicle powertrain. The program will use a combination of experts from St. Clair College’s School of Engineering Technology faculty as well as experienced education experts to develop lesson plans and STEM curriculum connections. To prepare for a September start, the STEM program will be piloted as a summer camp, hosted at St. Clair College. Several community groups will be welcomed on campus to engage in the program and provide input on program design and curriculum. The college is excited about the launch and implementation of the program and looks forward to increasing local student interest in pursuing education and a career in the automobility sector.
